D2L Discovery

D2L Discovery is an online, asynchronous introduction to D2L Brightspace, the University of Calgary's learning management system. Designed for sessional and new instructors, this non-graded course helps participants build foundational skills for setting up, managing, and supporting courses.

Participants can work through any or all modules at their own pace. Each module includes introductory guidance, links to D2L Brightspace support resources, audio walkthroughs, interactive knowledge checks, and opportunities to practise in a D2L Brightspace Sandbox Course Shell. Facilitators are available through discussion boards and periodic Zoom office hours to help participants apply what they are learning to their own courses.

By the end of this program, you will be able to:

  • Identify the key features of D2L Brightspace and UCalgary's broader support system for learning platforms.
  • Explain how D2L tools support course content, communication, assessment, and grading.
  • Demonstrate creating a course shell that provides all of the functionality necessary for your teaching.

D2L Discovery includes seven modules:

  • D2L Basics
  • Setting Up the Gradebook
  • Building a Powerful Gradebook
  • Putting Your Content Online
  • Creating Quizzes Online
  • Collecting and Giving Feedback on Assignments
  • Communicating with Students
