Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) workshop series

In this 3-part workshop series, participants will explore ways to design, implement and assess a course-based research experience.

Series description

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) are scalable ways of involving undergraduates in research within your courses. CUREs have shown that participating students achieve many of the same outcomes as students who complete research internships. In this 3-part workshop series, participants will get an opportunity to explore CUREs, think of ways by which they can embed authentic research experience in their courses, identify the steps involved in implementing and assessing research experiences in their course. This workshop series is for anyone who is in a teaching role and/or interested in developing a CURE.

Designing a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE)

In this session, participants will explore the scope and scalability of CUREs and work towards identifying opportunities within their courses to embed CUREs.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss what a CURE is
  • Develop understanding of scope and scale of CUREs
  • Explore the Researcher Skill Development framework
  • Brainstorm ideas for CURE in their courses

Implementing a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE)

In this session, participants will explore the steps involved in implementing CUREs in their courses and engage in discussions on possible challenges and barriers to implementation.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify desired CURE learning goals
  • Explore the steps involved in implementing CURE in their courses
  • Identify challenges to implementation
  • Create an implementation plan

Assessing a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE)

In this session, participants will use the backward design framework to align learning goals with assessments for CURE and engage in discussion on the importance of critical reflection in CURE assessment.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate assessments of CURE
  • Use backward design to align learning goals with assessments
  • Explore the role of critical reflection and feedback in CURE
