Developing teamwork competency through interprofessional education

A growing body of evidence demonstrates that interprofessional education (IPE), teamwork competencies lead to safer patient care. Furthermore, there is a paucity of consistent undergraduate opportunities to gain proficiency in teamwork prior to transitioning to practice.  Healthcare learners from all disciplines continue to learn and practice teamwork in silos. There are infrequent and inconsistent opportunities to practice interprofessional teamwork together as undergraduates. The overall purpose of this initiative is to explore, collaborate, and develop an IPE curriculum for teamwork training for undergraduate students. Providing contextually relevant experiential opportunities for the learner in an interprofessional team situation is the key deliverable for this initiative. Simulation is the modality that allows for deliberate and reflective practice by individuals and teams and is crucial for the development of mastery and expertise.  The initiative will begin with the faculties of Nursing and Medicine with the expansion to other faculties as the framework is developed.
