Attend the Teaching and Learning Trans History screening and discussion event

UCalgary students and employees are invited to a discussion and screening of the film Framing Agnes on March 4.

The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning is proud to host a screening and discussion of the award winning film, Framing Agnes

Since its debut in 2022, the film Framing Agnes has been used by educators to teach trans history. The film has inspired a variety of discussions about how the subject is taught, the role history plays in society’s understanding of gender diversity, and what the response has been from learners.

Dr. Jules-Gill Peterson, PhD, is the author of A Short History of Trans Misogyny (2024) and is featured in the film that shares the story of Agnes – a transgender woman who participated in a gender health research study at UCLA in the 1960s and became a figurehead of trans history.

Director Chase Joynt breathes life into six previously unknown stories from the archives of the Gender Clinic through reenactments of interviews had with people seeking gender affirming care with the help of a lineup of trans actors. Styled after a TV talk-show, the interviews are a nod to the daytime TV programs that, for many, was their first exposure to gender nonconformity.

After the screening, Gill-Peterson, who is currently a Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University will deliver a short talk, followed by a discussion for attendees about the how, through the film, the subject of trans history has been explored in classrooms.

Teaching and Learning Trans History is an excellent forum for UCalgary community members to participate in a timely conversation about the history of gender health research.” says Derritt Mason, Acting Senior Director of the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. “Through discussions like these, we can share knowledge and classroom practices that engage the diversity of our campus community.”

University of Calgary students and employees are invited to RSVP to Teaching and Learning Trans History event, which will be held in person. Light refreshments will be provided.
