Looking for a boost? Helping someone else also benefits you
It has been a challenging year for all. Many of us are struggling with our mental health. Our task lists are long, we’re coming up on our second year in a pandemic, and the fewer daylight hours leave us feeling fatigued.
We could all use a boost right now.
Did you know that helping someone else is scientifically proven to benefit your own mental health and well-being? Helping others in meaningful ways sparks joy. That joy can inspire those around you to find their own acts of kindness, creating a snowball effect of positivity and goodwill.
We need that help now more than ever. Donating to the UCalgary United Way Campaign is a great way to show your local love and help thousands of Calgarians.
According to a Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and University of British Columbia study released in May 2021, 80 per cent of adults report feeling negative emotions like worry, anxiousness, boredom, stress, loneliness, isolation or anger due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The CMHA Calgary branch is a United Way-funded agency that provides same-day support for those who need it. CMHA Calgary is a gateway to ensure anyone can find the mental health supports they need, when they need them. Organizations like these need our support to continue providing these greatly needed community programs.
This past year has been hard on all of us. It is exponentially worse for those experiencing poverty. Food insecurity, experiences of homelessness, job loss, and complex medical needs — all combine to cause overwhelming stress for many.
The United Way Campaign directs resources to those who need it most. As winter progresses, our community needs us more now than ever, and every donation — whether one-time or monthly payroll contributions — counts. By supporting the United Way, you are changing lives and inspiring social change.
As President Ed McCauley notes:
During a challenging year like this one, it becomes even more important for us to come together as a community and support those who are struggling. The United Way is a longtime partner of UCalgary, sharing our same vision of improving quality of life in our city. We’ve already achieved some incredible impact together, and I believe we can reach our goal. UCalgary has the bold, caring and can-do spirit that it takes to step up and help those who are the most vulnerable right now.
Show your love
With only a few days remaining before the campaign closes on Friday, Dec. 10, we have only raised 49 per cent of our target of raising $625,000 for the United Way in 2021 — but you can help us reach this goal.
This is your last chance to help strengthen our community, inspire social change and improve lives. As the holiday season fast approaches, this is a great way to give back and improve your own sense of well-being.
If you haven’t participated already, make a one-time or monthly donation, share appreciation for your colleagues by sending virtual Givin’ Thanks stars, or participate in a 50/50 raffle.
Thank you in advance for your support!
