Program overview

This introductory course focuses on equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) within post-secondary teaching and learning. This course requires participants to reflect on their own positionality and its impact within the classroom, while also examining their pedagogical practice through an equitable lens. Participants will also analyze exclusion and inclusion within their discipline and curriculum, actively working to identify inclusive and equitable teaching strategies to promote an equitable learning environment for all students. The capstone project will involve participants drafting an EDIA Statement, that will encourage them to reflect on their beliefs about EDI and how they seek to promote those values through their teaching practice.

There will be two Zoom sessions in this course, 75 mins each. Participation in at least one of the two sessions is mandatory for course completion.

Program details

This badge is open to all academic staff at the University of Calgary.

Through this course, participants will: 

  • Understand the implications of their positionality (social identities) and those of their students’ in the context of teaching and learning
  • Identifying inclusive teaching strategies catering to all students, including BIPOC, LGBTQ2A+, Persons with Disabilities, neurodivergent among others. 
  • Reflect on their teaching in view of systemic inequalities and its impact on equity deserving groups
  • Draft an EDIA statement for their teaching dossier 

Module 1: Acknowledging Positionality and Intersecting Identities

By the end of this module, participants will:

  • Identify your own positionality and intersecting identities and how they are related to systems of power and oppression
  • Recognize social inequities
  • Begin reflecting on how your positionality impacts your teaching

Module 2: Countering Bias and Stereotype Threat in Teaching

By the end of this module, you will:

  • Gain a broader understanding of how social conditioning leads to prejudice and bias in people
  • Actively work to mitigate your own biases in a teaching and learning environment.

Module 3: Cultivating Inclusive and Equitable Teaching Practices

By the end of this module, you will:

Identify inclusive strategies to incorporate in your teaching and learning environment.

Module 4: Developing an EDIA Statement

By the end of this module, you will:

  • Design and draft an EDIA statement that will help you to articulate your values and beliefs on EDIA as related to your teaching practice.
  • Reflect on how you can put your values and beliefs related to EDIA into action.

Capstone Project:

Participants will be asked to draft and submit a 1–2 page EDIA statement.
