UCalgary History welcomes visiting graduate researcher, José Antonio Galindo Domínguez

José Antonio Galindo Domínguez, a doctoral candidate at El Colegio de México, is currently working on his doctoral dissertation, “The Business Republic: Debates, Arguments, and Projects of a Neo-liberal Program in Mexico, 1945-1994.” Antonio received an Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarship to work on his dissertation under the supervision of Dr. Amelia Kiddle for the Fall semester.  His research delves into the influential role of Mexican business elites in shaping the country’s neoliberal trajectory. This work uncovers deep-rooted transnational collaborations, that laid the groundwork for neoliberal policies. By analyzing the development of neoliberal thought and economic restructuring projects in Mexico from 1945 to 1994, the dissertation challenges the prevailing historical narrative that suggests neoliberalism in Mexico was primarily a political and intellectual import. Instead, it argues that examining a broader period reveals the development of interconnected liberal traditions within Latin America, influenced by international currents and in constant dialogue with other schools of thought. By focusing on Mexican entrepreneurs as key actors, the research explores the dynamics that led to the conception and promotion of a new liberalism in Mexico and the region.  Welcome Antonio!
