Nursing instructor and master's student examining racism and discrimination faced by Muslim nurses
UCalgary Nursing instructor and Master's student, Zahra Upal, received a boost for her research recently when it was announced she would receive the Alberta Human Rights Commission's 2021 - 2022 Pardeep Singh Gundara Memorial Scholarship.
Two awards, one for doctoral level students, valued at $15,000 and the Master's level award for $10,000 support graduate studies in Canadian human rights and multiculturalism.
Upal's research will examine incidents of racism and discrimination faced by Muslim nurses in Alberta. Learning more about the frequency and impact of these workplace occurrences will help inform improved human rights policies and processes within the health-care system.
The award is funded through an endowment by the Human Rights Education and Multiculturalism Fund and is administered jointly by the Alberta Human Rights Commission and Alberta Advanced Education. Its naming acknowledges former director of the Southern Regional Office of the Alberta Human Rights Commission, Pardeep Singh Gundara, and his 33 years in public service as well as his lifelong commitment to human rights.
Congratulations Zahra!
