Jeff Biernaskie shares his approach to burn treatment and care
In 2019, Dr. Jeff Biernaskie, PhD, was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, in recognition of his leadership in the field of tissue regeneration and stem cell biology.
Biernaskie has made seminal discoveries in this area, including how reactive immune cells contribute to tissue regeneration, and how dermal stem cells are activated following an injury, and initiate the formation of healthy cells within a wound. His multidisciplinary research program, which includes work with biomedical engineers, biologists, and clinicians, has allowed him to develop creative approaches to solve complex health problems.
Biernaskie is an associate professor in the Department of Comparative Biology and Experimental Medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society Chair in Skin Regeneration and Wound Healing. He has a joint appointment in the Cumming School of Medicine, and is a member of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.
The Royal Society of Canada recognizes outstanding mid-career academic leaders through Membership in the College of New Scholars. Fellows of the RSC are senior-level academics who are recognized as the best in their field. The nomination deadline for both membership and fellowship is December 1 annually.
