Calling all recent science and engineering grads — 10 new scholarships available to expand business skills

Over $130,000 in scholarship funds are available to recent graduates with a science or engineering background who want to gain a business education through a Haskayne Master of Management. Students starting in fall 2023 are eligible for eight scholarships at $10,000 and two scholarships at $25,000.

“These are life-changing scholarships that have been generously established by the Woitas family,” says Jim Dewald, dean, Haskayne School of Business. “They are keenly interested in supporting those that have a technical background to learn the skills needed to make things happen through business.”

Only 10 months in length, the Haskayne Master of Management program is designed for recent graduates with a non-business bachelor's degree. Students with a variety of backgrounds each bring their own perspectives to the cohort.

“The Master of Management positions itself in between an undergrad and an MBA, that kind of helped to bridge the gap going from science into business,” says Jeremy Eusebio-Wong, BSc’18, MMgmt’21, Business Analyst Propel Ventures. “I received an opportunity to work with a pre-revenue startup doing research to look for more opportunities for the company.”

The scholarships are all based on academic merit and extend over the next three years, totalling 30 science and engineering students who can receive a MMgmt scholarship. The deadline for interested recent grads to apply for the Master of Management is Feb. 1, 2023 for international students and June 30 for domestic students for a fall start, although interested candidates would be wise to apply early to secure their spot in the next cohort.

“These graduates will be the leaders that are needed in our workforce,” says Linda Woitas, DipEd’76 and Med’91. “Our family is honoured to really enable these young leaders to be ready to make an impact.”

The family has a passion for education and a connection to Haskayne. Josh Woitas, BComm’03, MBA’05, and Carson Woitas, BSc’08, MBA’16, are both double alumni from the University of Calgary and graduates from Haskayne. Their mother, Linda, is a double UCalgary alumna and their father, Clayton, is a respected leader in the energy sector and Calgary Business Hall of Fame laureate.

In October the Kennedy Scholars Program was announced, which also supports students pursuing a Master of Management. The prestigious full-ride scholarship will be awarded to two incoming students who are will be completing a bachelor’s degree in computer science followed by a master’s in management.
