14th James S. Palmer Lecture Series to feature Anne Applebaum on March 25
Anne Applebaum
The James S. Palmer Lecture Series was established to pay tribute to James S. Palmer’s dedication and service to the University of Calgary during his term of office as chancellor, and for his continuing support of post-secondary education in the province of Alberta. It is one of the most significant public academic activities hosted by the University of Calgary.
The purpose of the lecture series is to expose students, faculty and members of the Calgary community to eminent thinkers with international stature and to promote discussion of important public issues. This year, The School of Public Policy will host the 14th James S. Palmer Lecture Series featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, journalist and commentator on geopolitics, Anne Applebaum.
With questions about alliances, economic and political insecurity, the idea of "The West" has never seemed as illusory as it does now. How has this happened, and what can be done about it?
In addition to being a 2004 Pulitzer Prize-winning historian for her non-fiction book, Gulag: A History, Applebaum is a columnist for the Washington Post as well as a professor of practice at the London School of Economics (LSE) Institute of Global Affairs, where she runs Arena, a program on disinformation and 21st century propaganda. Her book Iron Curtain was awarded with the 2013 Cundill Prize for Historical Literature. Applebaum has held the Phillipe Roman Visiting Chair in International History at the LSE, and has lectured at other universities, including Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Oxford, Cambridge, Humboldt and Heidelberg.
“Since 1995, the James S. Palmer Lecture Series has been one of the most important intellectual events in Calgary. The School of Public Policy is pleased to be able to continue with this rich tradition, thanks to the ongoing support of the late James S. Palmer and his family,” said Dr. Pierre-Gerlier Forest, PhD, professor and director, James S. and Barbara A. Palmer Chair in Public Policy, The School of Public Policy.
The lecture will be held at 2 p.m. on March 25, 2019 in MacEwan Hall. The event is open to the public and is free of charge, although registration is required.
