The Taylor Institute fosters the development of research-informed teaching practice at the University of Calgary, with the goal of enhancing teaching and learning. The Taylor Institute supports instructors in all aspects of their teaching development, including teaching strategies, classroom dynamics, course design, educational technologies, portfolios, philosophies and dossiers, assessment and teaching evaluations.
Teaching development workshops and activities
The Taylor Institute hosts a variety of workshops and activities that provide academic staff, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and staff with opportunities to strengthen and share their knowledge related to the scholarship and practice of teaching and learning.
Teaching development workshop pedagogy
The TI encourages members of the University of Calgary community to share their expertise by facilitating a workshop or activity related to teaching and learning in postsecondary education. All sessions hosted at the TI are designed to foster active engagement. We encourage session facilitators to thus design learning activities that provide opportunities for participants to do the following:
- Explore research-informed approaches to teaching and learning;
- Interact with colleagues to share and learn from each other’s experiences and contexts; and,
- Reflect upon how they may apply what they learn within their own contexts.

Instructional Skills Workshop
The Instructional Skills Workshop is a intensive four-day workshop that gives participants the chance to enhance their instructional skills in lesson planning, teaching, giving and receiving feedback, and critical reflection. The ISW uses an intensive, experiential learning approach, in which participants design and conduct three “mini-lessons” and receive feedback from other participants.
The Taylor Institute supports instructors who are new to teaching online or who wish to try new approaches to teaching online. The Taylor Institute offers workshops and resources on the tools and technical aspects of teaching online, as well as logistics and best practices.
Formative Feedback for Teaching Development
Formative feedback is an intentional, voluntary, developmental strategy for instructors to receive feedback (from a variety of sources) about their teaching with the goal to improve student learning. The Taylor Institute's Educational Development Unit has launched a formative feedback initiative to provide instructors with information, resources and strategies to incorporate into their teaching.
Teaching philosophies and dossiers
Teaching philosophies and dossiers communicate your beliefs about teaching and learning and document the scope and quality of your teaching practices and how you translate your beliefs into practice. The Taylor Institute supports instructors and graduate students to prepare philosophy statements and dossiers for job applications, tenure and promotion reviews, teaching award applications, and to support reflection on teaching and learning.
Emerging Teachers Development Program
The Emerging Teachers Development Program is a series of workshops for participants interested in developing their university teaching, with opportunities for discussion, practice and reflection. Participants who complete a minimum of five workshops in the Emerging Teachers Development Program can earn a digital badge offered by the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning.
SoTL Foundations Program
The scholarship of teaching and learning, or SoTL, is research-based inquiry by disciplinary experts at the post-secondary level who seek to understand or improve student learning, and the teaching practices that facilitate that learning. Through a series of discussion-based sessions focused on foundational SoTL readings and one workshop, Program participants will learn about scholarly, evidence-based approaches to student learning and to their own teaching. Graduate students who complete this one-semester Program will earn a SoTL Foundations badge and be prepared to support, collaborate on, and/or conduct SoTL projects (e.g., as co-applicants or RAs on University of Calgary Teaching and Learning Grants).
The Taylor Institute’s educational developers provide one-on-one confidential consultations with instructors, or group consultations with departments or committees.
The Taylor Institute has developed a workshop and compiled a number of resources to provide instructors with strategies for ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment that allows for open debate, respectful dialogue and a diversity of ideas.
To contribute to discussions on student engagement across the university community, and to encourage meaningful collaboration within the Institute’s learning spaces, the Taylor Institute is launching the Fostering Student Engagement Series, a collection of workshops and resources all contributing to furthering student engagement.

Themed Conversation Series
The Themed Conversation Series is a series of noon-hour discussions, hosted by the Teaching Academy which explore a range of topics related to teaching in higher education. These conversations give participants an opportunity to share experiences, explore ideas, and dialogue with peers about a variety of teaching issues.
