The FUSION Skill Development Program is a 10-hour online integrated learning experience delivered through D2L. It is designed to enhance student skills development in three areas critical to 21st century success and leadership: metacognition, communication, and problem-solving.

Note: The first 100 students to register and complete the modules by the specified deadlines will receive the $150 payment.

Completing the program
The FUSION Skill Development Program is intended to complement your experiential learning or work-integrated learning opportunity over the fall 2020 term. On September 25, 2020, five of the six modules will open in D2L, and must be completed by the specified deadlines. The sixth module, Reflect, will open on December 7, 2020 and must be completed by 11:59 PM on December 24, 2020.

The FUSION program involves the completion of six interactive online modules.
Introduces the program, orienting students on vocabulary specific to the learning platform. Also provides students with a brief introduction to the skills covered by the curriculum - metacognition, communication and problem-solving.
Metacognition is the awareness or analysis of one’s own learning or thinking. This module provides students with a guided introduction to metacognition as a skill. Introduces the concept of metacognition as important to learning and problem-solving contexts and relates metacognition to Bloom's Taxonomy.
Presents an introduction to the purpose of communication, the elements of communication, and one specific model of communication. Explores some of the nuances of communicating in online environments as compared to in-person communication.
Includes an introduction to problem-solving, common types of problems to solve, an overview of common problem-solving styles, and one model of problem solving.
Integrates learning from the explore modules and provides students the opportunity to apply their learning by leading them through the process of:
- Identifying a complex problem to solve from their specific learning context
- Forming a plan to solve this problem using metacognitive and communication strategies
Provides students with the opportunity to reflect on their learning experiences, particularly as related to metacognition, communication and problem-solving. Students will have the opportunity to self-assess their skills, identify areas of growth and target skills that they still wish to improve. Students will receive tips on how to communicate their skills to future employers.
What skills will I learn?
The FUSION program is open to current undergraduate students at the University of Calgary who are concurrently registered in one of the qualifying experiential learning (EL) or work-integrated learning opportunities (WIL) during the fall 2020 term.
Qualifying EL and WIL Opportunities include:
- Co-operative Education work term
- Internship work term
- Student Work Placement Program (SWPP)
- Qualifying work on-campus (e.g., an educationally-purposeful paid student position in a student services office)
- Peer Helper
- PURE program
- Students’ Union representative
- Simulation course (e.g. in Nursing)
- Research Assistantship
If you are a current University of Calgary undergraduate student and participating in a qualifying EL or WIL opportunity in the fall 2020 term, then you can register for the FUSION Skill Development Program by completing the following steps:

- If you do not already have one, create a Destiny One account using your UCID

Future Skills Innovation Network (FUSION) is a national cross-collaborative network of Canadian universities focused on exploring innovative and inclusive approaches to foster skill development and prepare university students across Canada for a rapidly evolving society and job market.
The project was in launched in 2019 as part of the federally-funded Future Skills Centre (FSC). In addition to UCalgary, the FUSION partner institutions are: Concordia University (QC), Carleton University (ON), Simon Fraser University (BC), the University of Saskatchewan (SK), and Memorial University (NL).
The FUSION program will be launched online in the fall of 2020 at each of the six FUSION institutions.
The FUSION project is a joint effort to expand opportunities for university students to develop skills that are needed for any career path. With special attention to equity and inclusion, FUSION’s initiatives seek to expand skill development experience and reflections for underrepresented students, such as Indigenous, racialized people, students with disabilities, immigrants, refugees, women in STEM, LGBTQ2S + peoples, non-traditional students and Canadians living in rural, remote and Northern communities.
Aiming to help universities prepare Canadian students for the future of the economy, FUSION focuses its actions towards achieving three main goals:
Integrate skill development in formal and informal learning
Develop flexible teaching and learning formats to better facilitate skills acquisition and translation to the workplace
Increase access to and success at university for underrepresented students
We will send you an email to confirm that you are one of the first 100 students to register for the FUSION Skill-Development Curriculum. If you receive the confirmation email and complete the modules by the deadlines, then you will be paid $150.
If you were one of the first 100 students to register and you did not complete all of the modules by the deadlines, you will not be eligible to receive the $150.
In this case, the students who received the confirmation email that they were in the first 100 to register and who did not complete the modules by the deadlines will not receive the payment. All registrations will be date/time stamped, and we will issue payment to the next student who registered and who completed the modules by the deadline.
(E.g. If you were the 105th student to register and completed the modules by the deadlines, and if five of the first 100 registrants do not complete the modules, then you will receive $150.)
Payments will be issued in January, 2021.
Yes, all students who register for the modules and complete them by the deadlines will receive the digital badge.
Digital badges will be issued electronically in January, 2021.
The Orientation, Explore and Apply modules are intended for students who are at the beginning and middle of their experiential or work-integrated learning opportunity. To get the most value out of the curriculum, and to have the best chance of integrating the learning with your experience, you need to complete them by the deadlines.
The Reflect module is intended for students to complete it towards, or at the end of their experiential or work-integrated learning. It allows students to look back on their experience and how they integrated their experience, their disciplinary/academic knowledge with their metacognition, communication and problem solving skills. You need to be finished (or almost finished) your experience to get the most out of the Reflect module.
