Inquiry and Scholarship in Teaching and Learning

Course description

In this course, we will engage in cross-disciplinary conversations about learning-centred inquiry and scholarship in teaching and learning. Participants will be invited to consider their teaching and learning context and to critically explore general and discipline-specific teaching and learning scholarship. Using the University of Calgary Teaching and Learning Grants framework and criteria, participants will develop a scholarly inquiry project proposal based on a question meaningful to their own context. In addition, rigorous scholarly inquiry will be supported as participants give and receive structured feedback on each other’s’ proposals. This course will incorporate face-to-face as well as online components and both individual and collaborative activities to support flexible, authentic learning opportunities.

Our approach

This course aims to build a scholarly, collaborative learning environment among its participants by using a blended format and creating space for peer engagement and review. During face-to-face sessions, participants will engage in small and large group discussions, have quiet time to reflect and write, engage in active individual and collaborative learning opportunities, and provide one another with informal and structured feedback. Online learning opportunities might include activities such as reviewing various media (e.g., video or audio material), participating on discussion boards, and sharing and reviewing work. Active participation is required in both face-to-face and online aspects of the course since material used in one environment will not be repeated in the other.
