The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Foundations for Graduate Students program invites graduate students across all disciplines interested in SoTL to join us for our third discussion-based session, Signature Pedagogies.
As in all sessions, we will take some time to become acquainted, to discuss/review what SoTL is, and to reflect upon the session’s reading as foundational to SoTL research and practice.
In session three, we take up Lee S. Shulman’s, “Signature Pedagogies in the professions.” In this article, Shulman explores the “nurseries” of professions, or their “forms of professional preparation” (p.52). Describing the signature acts, assumptions, and omissions that professions use to impart knowledge, we can regard Shulman’s piece as an invitation to contemplate the habits of hand, heart, and mind that are distinct to our disciplines.
